Kisii Woman Confesses to Dumping Infant in Pit Latrine, Cites Panic

A woman from Kisii County, Kenya, has admitted to dumping her seven-month-old baby in a pit latrine, sending shockwaves through the Nyaribari Masaba area of Keroka town.

The mother has been identified as Faith Kwamboka, a woman with three children. Neighbors reportedly became uneasy and alerted the village chairman after suspicions surfaced.

Village chairman John Rambo responded to calls from residents. “I arrived at the specified home and confirmed that she had thrown her baby in the pit latrine,” he told local media. Rambo then contacted officers from Keroka Police Station, who referred the matter to Ramasha Police Station due to jurisdiction. The officers allegedly asked him to accompany Kwamboka to their station and promised to send personnel to retrieve the infant’s body from the latrine.

Rambo also urged county authorities to ensure the safety of Kwamboka’s other two children, suggesting they might be vulnerable if left in her care. He appealed to mothers facing unwanted pregnancies or financial hardship, saying, “Do not throw or dispose of children like this. Seek support or alternative caregiving options.”

Authorities arrested Kwamboka and launched investigations. Before her transfer, she provided her side of events: the baby was reportedly born prematurely and was seven months old.

“I had a preterm birth for this baby. I have been living with the baby; she is 7 months old now. I woke up to feed the baby at night, like I usually do. I express my breast milk and bottle-feed my baby. The baby was too cold when I lifted her,” she said.

Kwamboka claimed she panicked and unsure of what to do, she claimed she waited until dawn before placing the body in the pit latrine. Some reports suggest her other children normally live with their grandmother. On the morning in question, she brought them home, and the grandmother, upon learning what had occurred, reportedly departed the scene, leaving the children in the compound.
