In commemoration of World Breastfeeding Week 2025, renowned intimacy coach and wellness advocate, Dr. Vera Chikezie-Oke, in partnership with NTA Channel 10, Lagos, hosted a special programme dedicated to honouring breastfeeding mothers while promoting emotional, physical, and psychological wellness.
The event attracted mothers, families, and health advocates who came together to celebrate breastfeeding not only as a vital source of infant nutrition but also as an act of intimacy and bonding between mother and child.
Dr. Chikezie-Oke, who has built a reputation as an advocate for holistic wellness, explained that the programme was designed to broaden the conversation around breastfeeding beyond its nutritional benefits. She emphasised the importance of emotional support, spousal involvement, and intimacy in helping mothers thrive during breastfeeding.
Motherhood is a sacred journey,” she said. “Beyond the nourishment breastfeeding provides, women deserve to be reminded of their worth, their beauty, and the importance of intimacy in strengthening bonds during this season of their lives. Breastfeeding is not just about feeding a child; it is about creating a deep emotional connection that shapes the health of both mother and baby.
Her remarks drew attention to an often-overlooked aspect of breastfeeding: the mental and emotional state of the mother. Dr. Chikezie-Oke highlighted that when women receive love, care, and encouragement particularly from their spouses and families they are more likely to flourish in their roles. In turn, this flourishing strengthens families and has ripple effects in wider communities.
One of the highlights of the celebration was the Baby of the Year Competition, which saw mothers proudly presenting their babies to an excited audience. The competition drew wide participation and created moments of joy and camaraderie. Winners received cash prizes and special gifts, adding to the atmosphere of appreciation for mothers and their children. The segment was met with applause and cheers, further underscoring the celebratory spirit of the programme.
The collaboration with NTA Channel 10 was particularly significant, as it provided a platform to reach a larger audience across Lagos and beyond. Organisers explained that by combining the reach of national television with Dr. Chikezie-Oke’s advocacy, the programme was able to deliver both education and inspiration to mothers across diverse backgrounds.
Beyond the celebration, the event also reinforced Dr. Chikezie-Oke’s mission of empowering women to embrace every part of their wellness journey. She has long advocated for a holistic approach to family health, one that incorporates physical, emotional, and psychological wellbeing. In her view, breastfeeding is one example of how these dimensions intersect: while mothers provide nutrition to their babies, they also need affirmation, love, and support to sustain their strength and mental health.
Participants at the programme expressed appreciation for the initiative, noting that it offered a fresh perspective on the challenges and joys of breastfeeding. For many mothers, the discussions and activities provided reassurance that their well-being matters just as much as their children’s. The inclusion of fun competitions and gift presentations also left participants feeling celebrated and valued.
By blending education with entertainment, the event succeeded in creating an atmosphere where mothers could feel inspired while also learning about the deeper significance of breastfeeding. Organisers said this approach was intentional, as it reflected the theme of World Breastfeeding Week 2025, which called for greater community support for mothers.
Dr. Chikezie-Oke concluded the programme with a call for families, communities, and institutions to provide more robust support systems for breastfeeding mothers. She noted that when women feel empowered and loved, they are better able to care for their children and contribute meaningfully to society.
The event in Lagos left participants with more than just fond memories. For many, it was a reminder that breastfeeding is both a physical activity and an emotional journey, one that requires intimacy, spousal support, and community care.
With initiatives like this, Dr. Chikezie-Oke continues to advance her mission of promoting wellness, strengthening family systems, and empowering women to embrace the fullness of their roles as mothers and nurturers.
