With its Hausa name meaning “transform dirt” Chanja Datti has grown into one of Nigeria’s leading social enterprises in plastic the recycling space.
Founded in 2015 by Olufunto Boroffice, in 2015, the organisation has championed cleaner cities, stronger communities, and sustainable development through innovative recycling initiatives.
Chanja Datti celebrated its 10th anniversary on September 12, 2025, at the Ya’ardua Civic Center, Abuja. The event brought together partners, friends, government representatives, private sector stakeholders, and members of the recycling-community to commemorate a decade of impactful work in transforming plastic waste into value.
During his opening Remarks, Seyi Boroffice presented the “The Spirit of Chanja Datti.” A short documentary on its journey from 2015 to 2025. He also presented the guiding principle of Chanja Datti: People, Planet, Profit, Partnership. Community interaction with wastepickers and stakeholders for feedback and next steps. Recognition of partners, including the Federal Ministry of Environment, Jaiz Bank, UNN, and Transcorp Hilton Hotels.
Key achievements of Chanja Datti is that it has diverted millions of kilograms of recyclable waste from landfills over the decade, created greenjobs and opportunities for women and youth, trained over 1,000 waste pickers with safety practices and entrepreneurial skills, introduced Cash for Trash systems rewarding communities for recycling participation and supported the enrolment of over 1,200 children in schools through proceeds from recycling initiatives.
Among those present at Chanja Datti’s tenth anniversary are representatives from the Federal Ministry of Environment, Jaiz Bank, and Transcorp Hilton and other prominent partners the climate change, green energy and recycling space.
The evening ended with Chanja Datti’s expression of a renewed commitment to expanding its vision and mission for a greener future.
