Mother of Two Dies Days After Alleged Hammer Attack by Partner, Leaving Two Children Orphaned

A 35-year-old mother of two, Zoe Marie Dixon, has died six days after she was allegedly attacked with a hammer by her partner at their home in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales, in a tragic case of domestic violence that has left two children without either parent.

According to South Wales Police, the incident took place late at night at the semi-detached house where Zoe lived with her partner, Nathan Thomas, 39. Investigators believe the assault occurred in the presence of the couple’s two children, aged 16 and 10, forcing them to witness a traumatic event no child should ever experience.

After the alleged attack, Thomas reportedly left the property and drove to Ponsticill Reservoir in the Brecon Beacons, a remote area several miles away. His body was discovered there about four hours later. Police believe he died by suicide.

The couple’s children were the ones who raised the alarm after their father left the house. In the midst of the confusion and violence, they had to seek help while their mother lay critically injured. The emotional impact of witnessing such violence and losing both parents within days is expected to have a lasting effect on their lives.

Emergency responders rushed Zoe to the University Hospital of Wales, where she remained in critical condition. Throughout the following days, family members stayed by her bedside, hoping she would recover. At one stage, there were encouraging signs that gave loved ones reason to believe she might survive.

Sadly, those hopes were not realised. Zoe died last Monday after succumbing to the severe head injuries she sustained during the attack.

Her death has devastated her family, friends, and the wider Merthyr Tydfil community. Beyond the loss of a daughter, friend, and loved one, two children are now left to navigate life without either of their parents.

To help support the children, a GoFundMe campaign was launched by family friend Laurie Williams. The fundraiser has already raised more than £1,400, with donations continuing to come in from members of the public touched by the family’s story.

Many donors have shared heartfelt messages remembering Zoe as a loving and devoted mother who always put her children first. Friends described her as resilient, funny, straightforward, and fiercely dedicated to her family. They said her greatest priority was ensuring her children felt loved and cared for.

Relatives have also spoken about the support network surrounding the children. They say the siblings will be cared for by their extended family, who are committed to giving them stability and love during an incredibly difficult period. However, they acknowledge that no amount of support can erase the trauma the children have endured or the grief they now face.

It has also emerged that Zoe and Nathan had been together since their teenage years, meaning their relationship spanned much of their adult lives. However, people close to the couple said the relationship had deteriorated in recent months and that they were reportedly in the process of separating before the incident occurred.

South Wales Police have classified the case as a domestic-related incident and confirmed that they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the deaths. Authorities have also assured the public that there is no wider threat to the community.

The deaths of both Zoe Marie Dixon and Nathan Thomas have now been referred to the Glamorgan Coroner’s Office, where formal inquests into the circumstances surrounding both deaths are expected to begin.

The tragedy has once again drawn attention to the devastating consequences of domestic violence. Beyond the immediate loss of life, such incidents leave lasting emotional and psychological scars on children, families, and communities. It also serves as a painful reminder of the importance of recognizing the warning signs of abuse, supporting those at risk, and ensuring victims have access to protection and help before violence escalates.
