Motherhood is often described as the most demanding yet rewarding role a woman can ever hold. It requires total sacrifice, patience, resilience, and an unyielding capacity to nurture.

As the political landscape of the world continues to evolve, allowing women to be seen and heard in halls of power, some women have dared to extend the duties of motherhood to the parliament.

Recently, on 24 September 2025, German lawmaker Hanna Steinmüller walked to the podium of the German Bundestag and delivered her speech while carrying her infant son in a front carrier. While some viewed the act as historic and bold, others are using it to push for deeper discussions about the visibility of children in public life. Underneath her act revealed the delicate but powerful balance many women sustain globally.

From nursery duties to national speeches, the German parliament witnessed firsthand the undeniable act of sacrifice at the centre of politics. Steinmüller, who had previously brought her child into plenary sessions but not to the lectern, carried him asleep as she spoke on the budget of the Ministry of Construction.

Formerly, the “just” definition of motherhood was the ability to raise children at home while sacrificing dreams and aspirations, but in recent times, women have held their children and homes in one hand while navigating their dreams with the other.
